Basic Latent Print Comparison

This forty-hour workshop is designed to help get the training process started for new examiners by introducing them to the terminology and concepts necessary to become a latent print examiner. 

This Basic Latent Print Comparison workshop is designed to introduce the student to the science of latent print examination. It will provide the student with the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct comparisons as a latent print examiner. By knowing the history of latent print examination, the biology of the friction ridge skin, levels of friction ridge skin detail, and proper ACE-V methodology it will help the student become an expert in the latent print discipline.
 

Goals:

This forty-hour workshop is designed to set the foundation for novice examiners who may not have had latent print training and are new to the science of latent print examination. Upon completion of this workshop, the student should gain knowledge of the history of latent print examination, an understanding of the philosophy of permanence, and uniqueness of the friction ridge skin, levels of friction ridge skin detail, proper ACE-V methodology techniques and understand requirements for admissibility standards for courtroom testimony.  The practical exercises are designed to reinforce the topics covered in the lecture each day.
 

Schedule:

  • History of Fingerprints – 2 hours – During this time the following topics will be discussed.
 
  • Biological Aspects of Fingerprints – 2 hours – During this time the following topics will be discussed.
 
  • ACE-V Friction Ridge Skin and the Identification Process – 6 hours - During this time the following topics will be discussed.
 
  • ACE-V Practical – 4 hours - During this time the students will be given 20 enlarged friction ridge impressions which they will apply their analysis skills using the topics discusses in the previous section.
 
  • Documenting Your Analysis – 2 hours - During this time students will be shown how to properly document their analysis so that other examiners can follow their thought process using 10 enlarged friction ridge impressions.
 
  • Comparing Smart – 2 hours - During this time the following topics will be discussed.
 
  • Palm Orientation – 2 hours – During this time students will apply the clues their learned in the previous discussion and orient 30 palm prints.
 
  • Scientific / Legal Issues involving Friction Ridge Skin – 2 hours – During this time the following topics will be discussed.
 
  • Comparisons – 18 hours – During this time students will combine all topics discussed and use magnifiers in order to locate corresponding latent impressions with the standard impression that they are given.
