Crime Scene Metal Detector Operations

What’s the best and most underutilized tool in the crime scene investigators tool kit? It could be argued that it is the CSI metal detector. This tool provides an investigator with the greatest possibility of finding shell casing, projectiles, and other metallic evidence at a crime scene.  Metal Detectors are an enormously useful tool for crime scene investigators.  While most law enforcement agencies have metal detectors available for investigations, far fewer agencies have personnel trained and qualified who know how to use them correctly.

Some departments don’t buy metal detectors or don’t use them is because they find the equipment to be too intimidating. They might never use the metal detector because they have never had any success with one.  Additionally, untrained investigators using metal detectors might cease to use them because they feel they don’t produce successful results.

This course provides the crime scene investigator with two days of hands-on crime scene metal detector training. The course is designed to enhance the crime scene investigator’s detecting skills by covering a host of topics including crime scene safety, evaluation of crime scene information, crime scene search techniques, and ultimately provide the investigator with a strong proficiency in the use of their metal detector.

Students will be evaluated daily through means of written and practical exercises to evaluate their competency in the learning objectives. The course final examination will include five simulated crime scenes where known and unknown forensic evidence must be successfully located and recovered by the student.
