Course Information
Basic Bloodstain Pattern Recognition

We all know how forensic science is under greater scrutiny by the criminal justice system, so it only makes sense to learn the relative sciences behind Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) if it is to be used in an investigation.  The 40-hour Basic Bloodstain Pattern Recognition course will provide a firm understanding of BPA through a unique blend of theory-enriched study, hands-on practical experiments with blood, and case presentations.

The level of detail given to theoretical concepts in fluid dynamics, physics, and trigonometry differentiates this class from many others. Craig believes it is all but impossible to recreate the countless variations in the basic bloodstain pattern types found at a crime scene. Through various refined and experimental apparatuses, the instructor demonstrates the forces of nature at work. Airborne blood is guided by these principles to create their final stain pattern, a pattern that the BPA practitioner must try to recognize.

In total the class does 16 experiments, the majority of which are completed by the attendees working in small groups. A few are performed as a class exercise, such as the shooting range.

This course will teach the attendee the relevant historical events that helped to shape BPA into the discipline we know today.

The following topics are included:
•    Bio-chemistry as it relates to human blood
•    Newton’s Law of Motion and other physical forces
•    Fluid dynamics
•    Core Trigonometry will be discussed
•    Precise measurements of stains in order to reveal the blood’s flight path and how the stain measured was created

This Basic Bloodstain Pattern Recognition course contains a well-established curriculum, has been peer-reviewed by experts, and is designed to be used as a reference guide throughout your career.
