Bloodstain Pattern Analysis:
From Observation to Reconstruction

The Bloodstain Pattern Analysis: From Observation to Reconstruction webinar is designed to assist the new or aspiring bloodstain pattern analyst with translating their observations into pattern classifications and their classifications into reconstructive decisions.

Students will learn what characteristics to document, how to use the observations of those characteristics to classify a bloodstain, and how to generate a valid reconstructive conclusion with the pattern classification and case related information. Students will complete a practical exercise using ground-truth bloodstain patterns.

Students will complete a group assignment where they will be provided with ground truth/lab-generated bloodstain patterns. In small groups, they will make observations of the patterns, classify the patterns, and build appropriate reconstruction conclusions for the patterns.

Course Outline & Schedule
1. Bloodstain Pattern Observations
a. Size, shape, distribution, location, appearance
b.  Utilizing a worksheet to make observations
c.  Demonstration of making observations from a pattern

2. Classification process
a.  Excluding patterns based on observable features
b.  Guided classification group exercise

3. Reconstructive conclusions
a.  Building valid reconstructive conclusions

4. Guided Group exercise/demonstration observation to reconstruction

5. Breakout sessions
a. Mini group exercises (utilizing break out rooms): in small groups, students will
make observations of a bloodstain pattern, classify the pattern, and build a valid
reconstructive conclusion.

6. Practical exercise review
a. Instructor will review the patterns that were utilized for the breakout session,
including the proper classification
b.  Groups will share their reconstructive conclusions

7. Review/ QA

8. Final Exam (Minimum passing score is 70%)

Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensics, a Master of Science in Forensic Science, and a PhD in Forensic Sciences, Dr. Amy Santoro is recognized by the International Association for Identification as a Certified Crime Scene Analyst.

Amy enjoys teaching and has taught courses in crime scene investigation and forensic photography to law enforcement and forensic practitioners. She is also an adjunct university professor, teaching undergraduate classes in forensic biology and general forensic science.
