Crime Scene Investigations for
First Responders

This three-day intensive course delivers a focused, “down and dirty” foundation in crime scene processing. Designed as an abridged, fast-paced program, it concentrates on the essential skills every responder must be able to perform confidently and correctly in the field.

Participants will learn the core principles of identifying, documenting, processing, packaging, and preserving physical evidence. Instruction begins with forensic documentation fundamentals, including digital photography, scene notes, sketches, and measurement techniques. The course then transitions into hands-on application, covering the proper processing and packaging of multiple evidence types using practical, real-world scenarios.

This streamlined program eliminates unnecessary theory and focuses on operational competency—what you need to know, what you need to do, and how to do it correctly under pressure.

Ideal for First Responders, Patrol Officers, Investigators, Supervisors, Detectives, Crime Scene Technicians, and Forensic Professionals seeking a solid, practical foundation or a skills refresher in basic crime scene operations.
 
Day 1
Initial Actions and Photography 

• Basic Photography
• Introduction to the Camera and understanding your equipment
• Demystifying the various shooting modes
• Exposure Triangle - ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture

Crime Scene Photography

• Overall, Mid-Range, Close-Up Photography
• Specialty Photography: Shooting Scene Evidence, Bodies, Vehicles and Close-up Photography

 
DAY 2
Crime Scene Documentation

• Crime Scene Notes
• Methods of Measuring and sketching
• Crime Scene Logs and Reports
• Evidence Packaging and Preservation

DAY 3
Friction Ridge Detail Evidence

• Basic Fingerprint Patterns (loop, arch, whirl)
• Categories (Plastic, Patent, Latent Prints)
• Latent Print Processing
  • Conventional Techniques (Brushes and Powders)
  • Magnetic Powder and Magnetic Wand

Trace Evidence and Impression Evidence

• Identifying Trace Evidence
• Collection and Packaging of Trace Evidence
  • Taping
  • Hand Picking
  • Druggist Fold

• Impression Evidence
  • 2-D impressions
  • Wet and Dry - Gel Lift
  • 3-D Impressions
  • Footwear/Tire track – Photography & Casting
  • Tool mark - AccuTrans/Mikrosil

All techniques are reinforced through structured, hands-on practical exercises designed to solidify and apply classroom concepts in realistic scenarios.  Student progress will be assessed through the use of a pre-test/post-test.  A passing score of 70% or higher is required to pass the course and receive a certificate of completion.  Exams will be maintained in the course file.

Michael Connolly, CCSI

Michael Connolly is a 29-year veteran of the Boston Police Department with prior service in patrol, plainclothes, and bike units. Since 2001, he has been assigned to the Crime Scene Response Unit (CSRU) and serves as a Ten Print Examiner and Certified Crime Scene Investigator (CCSI) through the International Association for Identification.
