FIREARMS HANDLING, SAFETY, AND BALLISTIC EVIDENCE PROCESSING

Course length: 16 hours


Firearms Handling, Safety, and Ballistic Evidence Processing

This course concentrates on safe firearms handling techniques, performance of loading and unloading methods, safety checks, functions tests, and identification. Firearms nomenclature, action classification, and definitions will create the basis for processing revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Evidence handling considerations will include maintaining security of ballistic evidence, marking of firearms items, and evidentiary property invoicing. The use of personal protective equipment will also be incorporated into practical exercises as the course progresses.
 
This course is open to agencies with access to a firearms reference vault or other collection of firearms required for the presentation of the course.  Please contact the training division for an up-to-date list of firearms needed.

Full Review of Types of Firearms, Actions, Cartridges and Handling
Practical Handling Exercises & Final Examination

Emilio Alvarado, MS
Emilio Alvarado has over 30 years of military and law enforcement firearms training and instructor experience. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a retired Detective Investigator from the New York City Police Department’s Forensic Investigations Division. Staff Sergeant Alvarado served as an Formal School Instructor and marksmanship coach. As a Detective Investigator within the NYPD he created a civilian firearms training program for the Police Laboratory and Detective Training Bureau and a was assigned as a Firearms Examiner.
