FORENSIC CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATIONS

Forensic Crime Scene Investigations

Learn the fundamentals of successfully identifying, documenting, processing, packaging and preserving evidence at a crime scene. The course will begin with the forensic fundamentals of documenting crime scenes through digital photography, notes, sketches and measurements and will conclude with processing and packaging several different types of evidence. This five-day course is perfect for any Investigator, Supervisor, CSI, Detective, Officer or Forensic Professional.

DAY 1 Initial Actions and Photography

  • Initial Response
  • Documentation (Overview)
  • Basic Photography
    • Introduction to the Camera - Understanding your equipment
    • Demystifying the various shooting modes
    • Exposure Triangle - ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture

DAY 2 Crime Scene Photography

  • Overall, Mid-Range, Close-Up Photography
  • Specialty Photography
    • Scene Specific - Shooting Scene Evidence, Death Investigation, Vehicles, etc.
    • Special Techniques - Macro photography, Painting with Light,Chemiluminescent

DAY 3 Crime Scene Documentation

  • Crime Scene Notes
  • Methods of Measuring and sketching
  • Crime Scene Logs and Reports
  • Evidence Packaging and Preservation
    • Firearms and Ballistic Evidence
    • DNA/Blood
    • Clothing

DAY 4 Friction Ridge Detail Evidence

  • Basic Fingerprint Patterns (loop, arch, whirl)
  • Categories (Plastic, Patent, Latent Prints)
  • Latent Print Processing
    • Conventional Techniques (Brushes and Powders)
    • Magnetic Powder and Magnetic Wand
    • Chemical Development and Collection (Cyanoacrylate (Superglue) Fuming,AccuTrans/Microsil)


DAY 5 Trace Evidence and Impression Evidence

  • Collection Techniques
  • Collection of Trace Evidence
  • Impression Evidence
    • 2-D impressionsWet and Dry - Gel Lift/ESDL
    • 3-D ImpressionsFootwear/Tire track – Photography & CastingToolmark - AccuTrans/Mikrosil

Assessment: Written Final Examination

  • Passing score is 70%


Mandatory equipment to have for class Digital Camera (DSLR or Point and Shoot) w/charger Off Camera Flash w/ cord Removable Storage for Camera (i.e., SD card) Tripod Flashlight

Suggested equipment Macro Lens

Any equipment that has been issued or is in use by you or your coworkers

Michael Connolly is a 29-year veteran of the Boston Police Department with prior service in patrol, plainclothes, and bike units. Since 2001, he has been assigned to the Crime Scene Response Unit (CSRU) and serves as a Ten Print Examiner and Certified Crime Scene Investigator (CCSI) through the International Association for Identification.
