Sexual Assault Scene Investigation

The Sexual Assault Scene Investigation webinar is designed to assist the crime scene responder with assessing and processing sexual assault crime scenes. Students will learn how to assess these scenes, how to determine which scenes require which types of evidence to be collected, and how to search for biological evidence.

Dr. Santoro will provide instruction on how to utilize an alternate light source to locate biological evidence and how to utilize the AP and P30 presumptive tests for seminal fluid. Attention will also be given to the evidence linkage triangle and how to properly collect evidence from suspects in sexual assault cases. 
 
Course Outline & Schedule
1. Sexual Assault scene assessment (60 minutes)
     a.   Ingress/egress considerations
     b.  Trace evidence
           i.   When to consider
           ii.   How/when to collect
     c.  “Touch” DNA
           i.   When to consider
     d  Latent fingerprints
          i.   When to consider
     e.  Biological evidence 

2. Semen searching/biological evidence  (90 minutes)
     a.  Utilizing an alternate light source
           i.   ALS photography (biological evidence)
     b.  Acid Phosphatase testing
     c.  PSA/p30 testing
     d.  The semen searching “funnel”

3. Non-semen biological evidence (30 minutes)
     a.   Saliva (searching and testing)
     b.   Vaginal fluids (searching)
     c.   Urine (searching and testing)

4.  Suspect processing (30 minutes)
     a.   When to consider suspect processing
     b.   Sample collection 
     c.   Case review

5.  Review/ QA (15 minutes)

Final Exam (15 minutes)  *Minimum passing score is 70%

Holding ​a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensics, a Master of Science in Forensic Science, and a PhD in Forensic Sciences, Dr. Amy Santoro is recognized by the International Association for Identification as a Certified Crime Scene Analyst. 

Amy enjoys teaching and has taught courses in crime scene investigation and forensic photography to law enforcement and forensic practitioners. She is also an adjunct university professor, teaching undergraduate classes in forensic biology and general forensic science.
