Tenprint Certification Preparation

Are you preparing to take the International Association for Identification’s Tenprint Certification Test? Studying for a test can be daunting task, but with this prep course you will feel confident in your preparation to take IAI Tenprint Certification. This Tenprint Certification Prep course will consist of a review of the material that covers all three portions of the Tenprint Certification Test.

On Day One, the students will prep for the written examination portion of the certification test. A review of the required readings will cover the major topics in the following areas: History of Fingerprints, Biology of Friction Ridge Skin, Pattern Interpretation, Systems of Classification, Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), Taking Legible Prints, and ACE-V methodology. Significant court cases pertaining to the area of fingerprint evidence as well as the criteria for Daubert and Frye will be discussed. The day will end with the reading and discussion of scientific studies including NAS Report, Black Box, White Box, and Twin Studies.

Day Two will prep students for the Technical Examination portion by an in-depth review of all rules of pattern interpretation. Students will be given exercises to reinforce their understanding of these rules. Students will end the day with a sample set of fifty (50) fingerprints to classify to simulate the Technical Examination portion of the IAI Tenprint Examination.

Day Three will prep students for the Comparison portion of the Tenprint Certification Examination. The students will review ACE-V comparison methodology and searching techniques. Students will be given a practice comparison examination.

Day 1:
  • Requirements for the IAI Tenprint Certification Test
  • History of Fingerprints (Brief Overview of topics) and Associated Readings
  • Biology of Fingerprints (Brief Overview of topics) and Associated Readings
  • Recording Fingerprints (Brief Overview of topics) and Associated Readings
  • Systems of Classification (Brief Overview of topics) and Associated Readings
  • ACE-V – Identification Process (Overview) and Associated Readings
 
Day 2:
  • Technical Examination Requirements
  • Types of Patterns
  • Loops:  3 requirements of a loop – a delta, a sufficient recurve, and a ridge count
    • Practice Exercises for Determining Type of Loop; Determining Sufficient Recurve; Determining Typelines; Locating Deltas;  Ridge Count Exercise
  • Arches:  Determining the difference between a Plain and Tented Arch
    • Practice Exercises for Arches
  • Whorls:  Understanding the rules that differentiate between 4 Types of Whorls (Plain Whorl, Central Pocket Loop Whorl; Double Loop Whorl; and Accidental Whorl) and how to determine Whorl Tracings. 
    • Practice Exercises will be given on Whorl Pattern and Whorl Tracings
  • Fingerprint Pattern Interpretation Exercise of 50 Fingerprints

  • Review of Day 2
  • Comparison Examination Requirements
  • Comparing / Searching Smart – Tips and Tricks on Searching Tenprint Cards
  • Practice Comparison Examination
  • Course Review
