Analysis & Documentation of Medicolegal Death Investigations

​This is a five-day, 40 hour, course that will cover basic topics in analysis and documentation of medicolegal death scenes, to include techniques of crime scene investigation.  This course incorporates an interdisciplinary approach and is designed for death investigators, crime scene investigators, detectives, attorneys, and any other investigator involved in the scene.  The course will assist the investigator with the knowledge and confidence needed to properly observe, document, and process a death scene through time of death indicators, wound characteristics, evidence collection, scene observations, etc.

Students will gain knowledge of best practices in crime scene investigation and medicolegal death investigation and analyze real-world case studies of equivocal deaths. The student will gain fundamental knowledge in all manners of death, including homicide, suicide, natural, and accidental.


Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Death Investigations
(Instructor Lead)-8 hours
Each Section will have an instructor lead presentation and group discussion, with case studies

  1. Introduction to the Course
  2. Pretest
  3. The Death Investigation System
  4. Job Responsibilities on a Death Scene
  5. Cause and Manner of Death
  6. General Crime Scene Considerations

Day 2: Documentation and Observations at Death Scenes
(Instructor Lead)-8 hours
Each Section will have an instructor lead presentation and group discussion, with case studies

  1. Types of Physical Evidence at Death Scenes
  2. Scene Considerations: Cross Contamination, Legal Considerations and Best Practices
  3. Crime Scene Documentation, Collection, and Processing on Scene and at Autopsy
  4. Special Considerations: Bloodstains and Ballistics Basics
  5. Special Considerations: Anthropology, Entomology, and Botany

Day 3: Wound Characteristics and Postmortem Changes
(Instructor Lead)-8 hours
Each Section will have an instructor lead presentation and group discussion with case studies

  1. Time of Death Indicators/Postmortem Changes
  2. Sharp Force Injuries
  3. Blunt Force Injuries
  4. Gunshot Wounds
  5. Fractures
  6. Asphyxiation/Strangulation
  7. Overview of Special Cases (Child Deaths, Buried Bodies, Surface Remains, Drowning)

Day 4: Overview of Investigative Issues
(Instructor Lead)-8 hours
Each Section will have an instructor lead presentation and group discussion

  1. Report Writing
  2. Courtroom Testimony
  3. Health Considerations at Death Scenes
  4. Emotional Wellness
  5. Case Studies


Unit 5: Case Study Evaluation and Group Presentation-8 hours

  1. Medicolegal Death Investigation Group Work: Students will be divided into small groups and given additional case studies.  Groups will document observations, list evidence they would collect, describe how they would document and process the scene, etc.  The groups will write a death investigation report and then present their findings to the class. 
  2. Post test
