Foundational Friction Ridge Comparison

Latent print examiners face conflicting pressures for high productivity and thoroughness as they struggle to control backlog. An evolving paradigm shift from reporting absolute identifications to using probability modeling has left many examiners without an understanding of the historical foundations of friction ridge skin (FRS) identification. In court, calling attorneys often fail to lead the FRS expert through testimony in a logical and comprehensive sequence of questions.

Students in this basic to intermediate level of training will increase both speed of comparisons and ability to make difficult identifications through systematic target selection, target memorization, and target acquisition. Students will be able to explain the evolution of the philosophies of science as applicable to FRS comparison. Students will testify in accordance with current best practices in the discipline of FRS identification and include all essential elements of expert testimony in a logical sequence.
