This 40-hour Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) course will give students the working knowledge and tools to correctly identify and document bloodstain patterns. It will introduce the student to bloodstain terminology, the fundamental principles of BPA, theories, and science behind pattern formation, proper documentation of bloodstain patterns, and mathematic principles used in BPA. Instruction will be given through lectures, practicals, experimentation, and group presentations.
Throughout the course, students will learn how to identify different types of bloodstain patterns, such as passive, projected, and transfer patterns. They will also learn how to interpret the size, shape, and distribution of bloodstains to determine the nature and direction of the impact that caused them. Upon completion of the course, students will have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of bloodstain pattern analysis and be able to apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios. This course is suitable for individuals interested in pursuing a career in forensic science or law enforcement, as well as for those who want to develop a better understanding of the science behind bloodstain pattern analysis. David Garber holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Creighton University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Science from Chaminade University, and a master’s degree in public administration with a criminal justice emphasis from San Diego State University. He is a court-qualified expert in crime scene documentation, latent print processing, bloodstain pattern analysis, and shooting incident reconstruction. Garber has been employed as a forensic scientist since 2000, with current duties including crime scene investigation and reconstruction, as well as latent print processing. He serves as the Technical Leader for both the Crime Scene Response and Latent Print Processing Units within his agency. |
