FORENSIC USE OF SMARTPHONE APPLICATIONS

Course length: 21 hours


The primary purpose of this Forensic Use of Smartphone Applications course is to identify and instruct smartphone applications for use on crime scenes. Smartphone applications and hardware have been becoming common place in today’s society and this includes the law enforcement community. 

The Forensic Use of Smartphone Applications course will review the legal aspects of the use of these devices at crime scenes and will discuss misconceptions about such use.  Recommendations for basic and advanced guidelines governing the use of smartphones on crime scenes will also be discussed.  The students will be provided with hands-on experience in using a variety of applications and hardware that can save the student and their agency time and money. 
 
The following equipment is required for attendance:  a smartphone (either Android or Apple based), a measuring tape and ruler, and any hardware that the student may be utilizing at this time.

  • Seek Thermal App
  • CrimeScenePhoto Marker
  • CSI Marker
  • GPS Compass
  • Measures
  • BS calculator, BPS angle finder and Spatter Pro
  • Document Scanners
  • Translation Apps
  • Reference Apps such as FBI, FDLE and JFS Apps
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Legal Aspects

8:30 – 9:45      Gathering paper documentation from a crime scene
                                    How to document and store
 
10:00 – 12:00  Crime Scene sketches
                                       Blood Spatter and Crime Scene Reconstruction
 
12:00 to 1:00  Lunch
 
1:00– 1:45       Utilizing app to assist you on scene
                                       Drug recognition, maps and others
 
2:00 – 4:30      iPhone Watch/Reference apps

8:30 – 9:45      Putting all the applications together

This course has been approved for 21 hours of certification/recertification training credits by the IAI Crime Scene Certification Board and 7 hours of certification/recertification training credits by the Forensic Photography Certification Board.

Lawrence Stringham
Larry has been connected with law enforcement since 1985 when he joined the US Air Force as a Security Policeman. Working with the USAF and later with the National Guard, Larry became a certified Police Officer in Little Rock Arkansas.

​He has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and has testified as an expert in the fields of latent print identification, 10-print identification, and crime scene procedures to include forensic light sources, photography, scene processing, crime scene reconstruction and Evidence procedures and Management. He presently sits on the Board of Directors for the IAI and is on the Chairs the Management Committee.  He is presently serving as the Conference Planner for the Florida Division of the International Association for Identification (FDIAI) and is a past president of the FDIAI.
