About Kelly Ayers
Kelly Ayers started at West Virginia University in 2010 as a Curriculum Developer and Instructional Coordinator for what was then known as the Forensic Science Initiative. In October 2015, Kelly was named the Director of the WVU Forensic Science Academy for Professionals, the continuing education arm of the Department of Forensic and Investigative Science. In these positions, she has developed and instructed crime scene related continuing education courses as well as academic courses as part of the WVU FIS Minor and the LLM program in Forensic Justice at the WVU College of Law. Kelly has reviewed book proposals for Elsevier and served on the Technical Working Group assembled by Forensic Quality Services to write guidance documents for the implementation of ISO 17020 accreditation for police forensic units. Previously, Kelly worked for the Asheville, NC Police Department as a Forensic Services Technician (I-III). In this assignment, she responded to crime scenes for evidence documentation and collection, having been recognized in North Carolina Superior Court as an expert in forensic identification.
Kelly has extensive experience instructing courses in the following topics in online and on-site formats:
Kelly received a Master of Science degree in Forensic Science Administration from Oklahoma State University in 2010, a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Identification from West Virginia University in 2001, and a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Philosophy and Biology from Frostburg State University in 1996 and 2003, respectively.
Kelly is a member of both the International Association for Identification (IAI) and the Chesapeake Bay Division of the IAI. She is an IAI Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst, First Vice President of the CBD-IAI, and chairs both the Crime Scene Certification and Student Development Committees for the CBD-IAI.
