LABORATORY PHOTOGRAPHY 

​Instructor:  Keith Mancini, BS, CFPH, CFVE
Course length: 16 hours


The thorough documentation of a crime scene frequently includes the photography evidence at the scene, but sometimes evidence is collected for photography at a later time in the laboratory or in an office setting.  This course includes instruction on this specialized photography of evidence. 

Topics include:
  • Photographic equipment, settings, and techniques
  • Lighting techniques and documentation of luminescent light
  • General documentation and closeup photography
  • Resolution requirements
  • The following evidence types will be discussed and practiced:
    • Clothing
    • 3d objects
    • Footwear Impressions
    • Tool marks
    • Blood spatter
    • Weapons
    • Automobile paint
    • Glass
    • Luminescence including fluorescent and chemiluminescent materials such as Bluestar® Forensic or Luminol
 
This course will begin with a review of basic photography and will move into more advanced techniques that can be employed to illuminate and photograph evidence yielding examination quality photographs as a result.

    1. Camera Settings
  4. Basic Photographic Principals
  5. Practical Exercises:
    1. Exposure/ Metering
    2. Shutter Speed
    3. Depth of Field
    4. Perspective
  6. Lighting Techniques
  7. Luminescence (i.e Fluorescent Materials, Bluestar® Forensic)
  8. Practical Exercises:
    1. Lighting Techniques
 
 
DAY 2

  1. Evidence Photography
  2. Practical Exercises:
    1. General documentation
      1. Clothing
      2. 3d objects
    2. Examination quality photography
      1. Footwear Impressions
      2. Tool marks
      3. Blood spatter
    3. Reflective objects
      1. Weapons
      2. Automobile paint
    4. Glass
    5. Fluorescence
    6. Chemiluminescence (Bluestar® Forensic)

This course has been approved by both the Crime Scene  and Forensic Photography Certification Boards for 16 hours of certification and re-certifications.

Keith Mancini
​Keith Mancini has been a Forensic Photographer for the Westchester County, NY Forensic Lab for the past 22 years. He graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Photographic Communications (BioMed Photo for short).

​Keith is certified as a Forensic Photographer and Forensic Video Examiner by the International Association for Identification. Keith is also a member of the National Institute of Justice’s Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) Video and Image Analysis Subcommittee, 
and a member of the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE) where he serves on the Photography task groups.
