PALM PRINT COMPARISON

Course length: 24 hours


This 3-day, 24 hour Palm Print Comparison course provides in depth information on what friction ridge skin is specifically in reference to palm prints, the history of discoveries made in the comparison of friction ridge skin, comparison methodologies, and important terminology used in the ridgeology science. 

This course also includes practical palm print exercises designed to reinforce the material and techniques presented.  The exercises build the examiner’s skills through the course in comparing palm prints and becoming more efficient in identifying clues for searching palm prints.  This class is ideal for beginner latent print examiners who have not yet taken a palm print course or advanced examiners who are looking for specific palm print comparison reinforcement. 

This Palm Print Comparison course will provide the student with knowledge of the history behind the ridgeology science and specific comparison skills for palm prints.  Lectures combined with practical exercises that are designed to provide knowledge of the fundamentals supporting the ridgeology science and palm comparison techniques will be presented throughout this course.

  • The biology and history of friction ridge skin
  • The fundamental principles of persistence and uniqueness
  • Overview of enhancements done to captured prints for comparison
  • The philosophy and “ACE-V” methodology of comparing and identifying latent prints
  • Palm print and foot print clues and orientation techniques
  • Challenging exercises for becoming efficient in comparing palm prints


*This course has been approved for 24 hours of certification/re-certification training credits in both the IAI Latent Print & Tentprint Certification Boards.

Michele Smith, CLPE, CSCSA
Holding a  Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Anthropology from Louisiana State University.  She is currently the Crime Scene Unit Supervisor at the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  She is a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst (CSCSA) and a Certified Latent Print Examiner (CLPE) through the International Association for Identification (IAI). 

She shares her passion for the work she does by providing training seminars, presentations, and workshops for law enforcement agencies around Louisiana and the United States.  She has been asked by numerous agencies, professional organizations, and educational programs to speak and teach topics regarding forensics, crime scene investigations, and latent prints. ​
