PRACTICAL CRIME SCENE
INVESTIGATIONS

Course length: 40 hours


This 40-hour course is designed combining theory, best practices, and real experiences as an intermediate level for several capacities of 1st Responders: Patrol Officers, Patrol Supervisors, Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, Arson Investigators and Medicolegal Death Investigators.  From the onset of the call for service through case preparation for court, we address the mindset to perform the work, the scene management, tried and proven positive techniques as well as negative experiences with lessons learned.  Multiple practical exercises are conducted throughout the course.

Day 1: Crime Scene Response and Management / Sketching / Bloodstain Pattern Recognition
Includes response to the scene, interviewing eyewitnesses, processing the scene, crime scene documentation, and bloodstain pattern recognition and documentation

Day 2: Crime Scene Photo Basics
Includes first responder photography and practical exercises, use of scales and close-up views, and nighttime photography.

Day 3: Multi Agency Scene Responses / Impression Evidence / Shooting Documentation
Includes discussion of experiences in major scenes with multiple agencies coming together to work together, photography documentation, molds and collection of impression evidence and the basics in shooting documentation.

Day 4: Latent Print and DNA Processing
Includes DNA and latent print processing on multiple surfaces and collection, friction ridge skin impression characteristics, and exercises.

Day 5: Documenting the Body / Investigative Report Righting / Case Preparation
Includes examples and discussion with documenting the body as well as scientific information, the do’s and don’t of investigative report writing as well as the personal and case preparation for court.

Being in the Law Enforcement field for 28 years, Andy Kehm has been a Field Training Officer, Emergency Response Team (SWAT) member for ten years, Water Rescue Team member, Criminal Investigator, and a founding member of the City’s Crime Scene Unit where he has testified as an expert in Crime Scene Investigations in Northampton County Court, Fingerprint Processing and Identification in Federal Court (3rd Circuit), Northampton County, and Lehigh County Courts, Crime Scene Investigation and Forensic Examination in Northampton County Court and Bloodstain Pattern Analysis in Lehigh County Court.
