SUPERVISION OF FORENSIC UNITS

​Instructor: Lawrence Stringham
Course length: 32 hours

Within the field of forensic science, many agencies provide little training to the new supervisor or those who are looking to lead in the future.  This Supervision of Forensic Units class is for those supervisors with lots of experience, to those who wish to be a wish to be a forensic supervisor one day.

 A depth of topics and hands-on material will give the student the information needed for today’s leaders.  Several topics will be discussed to include:
  • Ethics
  • Workplace politics
  • Determining workloads and employees
  • Training and FTO programs
  • Hiring and discipline
  • Evaluations

This 4 day class will also include many topics material to forensics to include:
  • Issues in supervising a latent, crime scene and evidence units
  • Management of time and work
  • Quality control issues
  • Accreditation issues including how to get accredited

Lastly, and most importantly, is how to determine if your personnel are being paid their worth, which including:
  • Statistics
  • Job descriptions and desk audits
  • Policies and procedures
  • Leadership styles
  • Your place in your department

Day 1
8:00 am           Introduction, paperwork and meet and greet
9:00 am           What is a supervisor and are you ready to become one?
10:00 am         Interview for a supervisor’s position
11:00 am         Ethics for the job,
12:00 pm         Lunch
1:00 pm           Ethics for the job (Continued)
2:00 pm           Supervision difficulties overseeing your peers and different age groups
3:00 pm           Workplace politics
5:00 pm           Dismiss
 
Day 2
8:00 am           Review from Day 1 and questions
8:30 am           Leadership styles
10:00 am         Management of Time and Work
12:00 pm         Lunch
1:00 pm           Policies and Procedures
3:00 pm           Determining workloads and employees
5:00 pm           Dismiss
 
Day 3
8:00 am           Review from Day 2 and questions
8:30 am           Job descriptions and desk audits
9:30 am           Your place in the department
10:00 am         Interviewing new employees and the hiring process
11:00 am         Training the new employee

2:00 pm           FTO program and the probation

8:30 am           Supervising several units at once (Latent, Crime Scene and others)

Lawrence Stringham
Holding an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Lawrence Stringham has been connected with law enforcement since 1985 when he joined the US Air Force as a Security Policeman.

He testified as an expert in the fields of latent print identification, 10-print identification, and crime scene procedures to include forensic light sources, photography, scene processing and crime scene reconstruction.
