Advanced Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

This Advanced Bloodstain Pattern Analysis training course is designed for experienced investigators who routinely investigate and are involved on bloodstained scenes.

The course will enforce and focus on the fundamental principles of bloodstain pattern analysis, introduce advanced mathematical principles, examination of complex bloodstains, sequencing of stains, analyzing textiles and fabrics, report writing, and experimentation. Both lecture and practical, mock scenarios will be incorporated.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Reinforce principles of bloodstain pattern analysis on advanced scenario settings
  • Develop and apply scientific methodologies to experimentation
  • Identify, classify, and provide analyses related to complex stain patterns
  • Apply bloodstain pattern analysis methodologies to photograph review

DAY 1- Students will be provided a review of the basic bloodstain pattern analysis course to reinforce objectives, methodologies, and proper terminology of bloodstains.

DAY 2- Students will be introduced to complex patterns and case scenarios that focus on sequencing of patterns. Students will also be provided an overview of the scientific method and experimental design and how it applies to bloodstain pattern analysis. Students will continue working through case review scenarios.

DAY 3- Students will be review fundamentals of bloodstains on fabric and textiles and discuss the examination of clothing as evidence as well as applying the scientific method and experimental design.

DAY 4- Students will review and be introduced to advanced report writing procedures as it relates to bloodstain pattern analysis. Students will practice descriptions of stains based on size, shape, appearance, and distribution. Students will be introduced to courtroom testimony procedures as well as bias within bloodstain pattern analysis. Students will also be introduced to conducting bloodstain pattern analysis from photographs.

DAY 5- Students will apply the knowledge, skills, and principles learned in days prior to complete a cumulative practical exercise. Students will be provided a mock crime scene scenario that they must properly document, photograph, mathematically calculate area of convergence and origin, and provide an analysis through written report. A synopsis of the case will be presented to the class and the photographs and reports will be submitted to the instructor for review and feedback.

*It is recommended that students have previously completed a basic bloodstain pattern analysis course or have experience in the field documenting bloodstain patterns.

** Students will need to bring the following equipment, if possible:
  • DSLR camera
