About David Larraguibel
David Larraguibel is an accomplished Forensic Photography Technologist with 12 years of experience at the Forensic Services and Coroner’s Complex, housing Canada’s largest forensic pathology service, where he has documented over 14,000 postmortem examinations. As the first hire for this role, David was instrumental in transforming the photographic documentation of human remains from an ancillary function into a vital service by developing a modernized photographic methodology and a cutting-edge digital imaging infrastructure suitable for high-volume death investigation in Ontario. Additionally, he developed a comprehensive workflow for multi-spectral photography for the purpose of documenting clandestine trauma and relevant identifying features on suspicious cases and unidentified remains. David has worked on numerous high-profile cases which have expanded his expertise in handling complex cases, including military and civilian aviation recoveries, mass shootings and vehicular homicides, combat deaths, organized crime assassinations, and serial murders. He is a specialist in the use of visible and non-visible light modalities to capture trauma and critical forensic images, including cross-polarization, infrared, and ultraviolet.
David holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from OCADU in Toronto, Canada, with a specialization in Integrated Media and Critical Theory. His dedication and skills have been acknowledged through awards, notably the prestigious BioCommunication BioImages 2022 exhibition Premiere Award in the bio-medical category. He has also made numerous contributions to academic publications, both in photography and written texts, including the Journal for BioCommunication and "On the Skin of Murder Victims" published by Carolina Academic Press.
David has also served as a Forensic Firearms Technologist and a certified IBIS operator at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto, Canada. In this capacity, he developed and validated a photographic infrared imaging protocol for distance determination, produce digital scans of ballistic evidence to produce 3D representations for examination and comparison. He conducted function testing on seized firearms and managed an armory of evidentiary weapons. David was also seconded to the Ontario Provincial Police as a Forensic Identification Support Technician, tasked with developing a comprehensive multispectral workflow as part of a new provincial body examination protocol, as well as provided training to recruit officers and Scenes of Crimes Officers on the utilization of field-expedient photographic imaging equipment for documenting evidence and crime scenes.
Beyond his extensive experience in forensic photography and imaging technologies, David is an experienced educator and public speaker. He has provided comprehensive training in postmortem, clinical injury, and multi-spectral photography to various professional groups, including Forensic Pathologists, Pathologist Assistants, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, and Domestic Violence Teams. He has also provided training to numerous military and civilian police services at all levels of government.
In addition to his educational endeavors, David is an accomplished public speaker. Regarded as a subject matter expert in Forensic Postmortem Photography, he was invited to serve as the Keynote speaker at the 2023 Forensic Photography Symposium in Toronto, a testament to his recognition and expertise in the field. He also served as a workshop instructor and lecturer at the 2023 IAI International Forensic Educational Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, further solidifying his role as a prominent figure in the world of forensic photography.
