About Karen Joseph
In December of 2019 Karen Joseph retired from the Miami Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Department as a firefighter, paramedic, hazardous materials specialist. During her 25 years on the department Karen obtained numerous certifications: Inspector 1, Instructor III, Live Fire Training Instructor 1, Educator’s certificate and 911 Safety Communicator. In 1999 Karen completed her AS degree at Miami-Dade College (MDC), in 2003 her BS degree at Barry University, and in 2008 Karen completed her MPA at Florida International University. While on MDFR, Karen served as a member of the Urban Search and Rescue Team Task Force 1 and was a member of the QA (Quality Assurance) Committee for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department. For over 20 years Karen was the Chairperson for MDFR Local 1403 Charities annual Toy Drive.
Firefighters with Miami Dade Fire Rescue work 9 days of the month which allowed Karen to pursue other opportunities. Presently, Karen is a Trainer/ Instructor with NOVA Southeastern University where she teaches hazardous materials and EMS classes. Karen also recently retired from Miami Dade Public Schools where she was a high school teacher for 15 years. For the last 8 years, Karen taught Criminal Justice and 911 dispatch at Law Enforcement Officers Memorial High School. While teaching high school she also served as a Sponsor/Advisor for the Health Occupations Students of America and the Florida Public Service Association. Karen served as an adjunct instructor at MDC for 17 years, where she taught in three different departments.
